Welcome to Fremont RE-2 School District

Fremont RE-2 School District is a consolidated and joint school district. The district serves the communities of Williamsburg, Rockvale, Coal Creek, Penrose, and Wetmore. Florence is the home of the district's administration offices, Fremont Elementary School, Fremont Middle School, and Florence High School, newly built in 2006. Penrose is home to a K-5 elementary school built in 2005.
Florence is located in close proximity to Canon City, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, and a two-hour drive from Denver.

The Plains and Pueblo Reservoir lie about 20 minutes east of Florence. The area is indeed blessed with great diversity in geography, enterprise and culture. The city of Florence has become a mecca for antique dealers and shoppers. Penrose is rich in agricultural produce, especially apple orchards, and Wetmore is a fertile ranching community

The Climate in the area of the Arkansas Valley has been known as the "Banana Belt". Winters are generally mild and summers are warm but comfortable. Fremont County
is a great place to live and enjoy.

Fremont Re-2 COVID-19 Update

April 21, 2020

Dear Fremont Re-2 Staff, Students and Families:

I hope this finds you well. Thank you for all that you have done to follow the restrictions placed upon all of us due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Yesterday, Governor Polis presented the plan allowing the Stay-at-Home executive orders to expire after April 26 with phased-in and guided restrictions of reopening Colorado.

Our school district will continue all the eLearning protocols through the remainder of the year. However, during April 27 through May 14 we will provide pre-scheduled access to teachers for increased support for our students, kindergarten through 12th grade via tutoring-like sessions. Preschool students will continue with eLearning as they have since March.

Within the next day or two, principals will detail how students may access support from their teacher for additional support. During this time period, we will allow voluntary participation, meaning as the parent or guardian you may choose to access this support or not. Principals have created plans that follow all social distancing guidelines to include staggered time and limited numbers of people.  Any child accessing additional support from their teacher will be kept to groups no larger than 5 plus their teacher. It is critical that the number of people in the building be strictly adhered to for the safety of all.

To keep the safety and welfare of everyone in mind, the following guidelines and restrictions will apply:

  • Everyone will be required to wear a facemask while they are on school property.  If you choose to bring your child to school for additional support, you’ll need to provide the facemask.  The district has not yet received a supply.

  • Everyone entering the school building will have their temperature taken.  Anyone with a temperature will not be allowed to enter the school building.

  • Regular hand washing protocols will be followed.

  • Anyone not feeling well, is asked to stay away from the school.  Stay home!

Students attending a session may be provided a snack or sack-lunch type of meal.  Transportation of students will not be provided April 27-May14 or for the remainder of the school year.  Students will need to bring their own water bottle as our drinking fountains will not be available.

The week of May 18-21 will be used to close schools, make sure all personal belongings are distributed to students and collect all technology devices.  Again, principals will communicate plans specific to their building procedures. No large group or gatherings specific to end of year activities, assemblies, or ceremonies will occur.  Senior student leaders are working with FJSHS administration to outline a graduation that honors and celebrates our seniors.  More details will be forthcoming.

Furthermore, we have two more changes that are underway to help with technology.  Soon the district will shift our website domain to a new website that is far more Google friendly.  This should make our eLearning Google Classroom platform easier to access and manage for everyone.  We are also working to expand internet access to possibly include our school building parking lots. The internet-parking lot scenario would mean that a parent or older student, who can drive, could work in their parked car in the school parking lot to access the internet.  Please watch for more details to be announced.

And last, we are working to provide a summer school program.  However, at this time details are dependent on COVID-19 restrictions and funding.  Please watch for more details to be announced.

I’m hoping you can appreciate how hard staff are working to continue educational support for the students in our community.  You might also be wondering, why are we trying to expand access for the 3-week period from April 27-May 14.  As we continue to learn more about COVID-19, it is becoming more evident that the virus may impact how we deliver education to students well into the next school.  Until there is a vaccine we have to open our minds to a new ‘normal’ of schooling. The has been designed in conjunction with education and health department leaders as a pilot program. If at any time Fremont County health is compromised we will discontinue the pilot program.

Our approach to the future of education is to think of ‘learning’ as the constant and the ‘delivery’ of learning as the variable. As a school district, we are going to have to be able to switch between delivering learning either in-person or through eLearning very fluidly and with modifications.

We miss our students!  Our students miss their friends and their teachers!  Please take good care and stay safe.

Dr. Brenda Krage, Superintendent
